A New Strategic Plan for a Leading UK Performing Arts School
Worked with senior management and distinguished alumni to create a new strategic plan
Founded in 1970, Urdang Academy was established as a response to the lack of diversity in ballet. The academy is now one of the UK’s leading performing arts colleges with a deserved reputation for its inclusive approach and its high-quality training for a career in musical theatre and dance.
The school is unique in its approach to breaking down cultural barriers, encouraging individuality and widening participation in the performing arts. Urdang takes talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds who don’t have the ‘right look’ and gives them opportunities because they believe it’s the talent that matters. It attracts significant funds to provide the financial support for those who would not be able to pay the full fees. And when they are students, the college follows through on its ‘everyone individual’ ethos, paying particular attention to each student’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
Urdang takes students from all sorts of backgrounds and turns them into west end stars. But as well as developing the performer, Urdang develops the person.
Junxion lead Urdang’s strategic planning, including helping to develop a new vision for the Academy, using approaches such as Design Thinking and Appreciative Inquiry to engage diverse stakeholders, and delivering a five-year strategic plan. We continue to support the leadership team as they begin to implement the strategic plan.
The process gave the organisation the ‘shot in the arm’ that the Board hoped to receive. Far-sighted but actionable steps are now being taken to move Urdang into its next phase of growth.
